5 Ways to Boost Housekeeping Productivity

Posted by HiRUM Software Solutions - 28/07/2022

We have heard it on the news and seen it all over the internet, “the great resignation”. Businesses that once had no issue finding staff are now struggling with minimum numbers. With this in mind, it is more important than ever to have happy staff members who feel valued and motivated to do their best.

Housekeeping staff make up a large quantity of the hospitality industry, and they are an essential part of running a successful accommodation business. Along with this, since the pandemic begun people have rated cleanliness as one of the most important factors in their decision to stay or return to a hotel.

In the hospitality industry, a valued housekeeper is more likely to be motivated to deliver a higher standard which then results in higher guest satisfaction. On the contrary, a lack of motivation can result in lesser quality of work and a bad guest experience. A lack of proper motivation is one of the main reasons behind the high turnover of staff in the hospitality industry.

The good news is that there are many ways to boost morale and keep your housekeeping staff motivated.

1. Offer them the chance to learn something new

Like any other profession, housekeepers need to continue learning new skills throughout the course of their careers. If you want to have a motivated team of housekeepers, training needs to be treated as an ongoing process and you must invest valuable time and resources into it. No matter how experienced a staff member may seem, ongoing training can help improve their performance, keep them engaged and expand their skillset.

2. Listen to what they have to say

The housekeeping staff are directly involved with the ins and outs of the business. They may know more about certain aspects of the business then the managers do, that’s why it is so important to listen to what they have to say. Listening to them and taking on board what they have to say will encourage them to be proactive and increase their motivation to improve the quality of your business.

3. Have transparent performance measures in place

Like any profession, it is critical to have key performance indictors for staff to strive for. These performance measures should be as objective as possible, and always take into consideration the amount of workload each staff member has. A measurement system that only keeps track of the number of rooms cleaned and doesn’t account for information such as the number of guests in that room is unlikely to keep housekeeping staff motivated. When staff know that their managers are striving to be as fair and objective in reporting on their performance, it will inspire them to work harder and earn better appraisals. A wish-washy performance measurement system, or a lack of transparency is likely to create staff who cut corners and only do their best work when being watched.

4. Reward good work and show them you value them

Show your staff that they are a valuable part of the team. Simple verbal recognition can go a long way and is important in maintaining employee morale. It can be easy to get in a trap of only addressing negative behaviours in the workplace. However, it is just as important to address positive behaviours and let staff know that you are pleased with their work. Additionally, if you can offer recognition in the form of small gifts, such as a gift card every time an employee’s name is mentioned in a review, or you notice a standout performance, this can be an easy way to inspire employees to work hard and help them to feel valued.

5. Increase their wages (if possible)

We understand this one isn’t feasible for every business owner. However, we think it is important that you consider your housekeeping wages and whether there is any flexibility. We all know that money is a key motivator, in fact it is often the biggest motivator in retaining your staff. It is important to review staff members pays incrementally and reward them with a pay rise where possible and necessary.

Investing time, effort, and money into creating a great environment for your housekeeping staff will reap its benefits. By motivating your housekeeping staff to do their absolute best, you will be creating a better experience for your guests who will likely want to return.
